Detection of Cracks Through Changes of Vibration Frequencies

Cracks found in structural elements have
various causes. In concrete structures, it
could be the opening of dry-joints between
precast elements, in particular in those
segmental-constructed box-girder bridges
assembled with dry joints that are favoured in
tropical countries.
Dimarogonas[1] presented the state-of-art
review of various methods in tackling the
cracked-structure problem.
Recently, Shifrin and Ruotolo[2] developed a
method that can be used to tackle a beam
with multiple cracks. However, their studies
were limited to Euler beams.
